Along Indonesia's 95,000-kilometer coastline, mangroves form a jade-like necklace against the azure sea and sky. These ecosystems are not only natural barriers for coastlines but also critical in mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity. Huayou has consistently integrated ESG principles into its mangrove conservation efforts in Indonesia, leveraging scientific planning, community collaboration, and ecological restoration to create a harmonious path where industrial development and environmental protection coexist.

Rooted Deep: Mangrove Planting Initiatives

Mangroves absorb carbon dioxide at five times the rate of tropical forests, earning them the titles of "Coastal Guardians" and "Marine Green Lungs." They play a vital role in purifying seawater, reducing carbon emissions, and maintaining biodiversity, serving as breeding grounds for marine life such as fish, crabs, and shrimp.

In 2023, Huaye and IMIP Industrial Park partnered with the Gondrong Morowali community to launch a mangrove restoration project in the coastal area of Labota Village. Over 1,100 mangrove saplings were planted, covering an area of approximately 11 hectares.

On Earth Day 2024, Huayou, Vale, and Ford jointly participated in a mangrove protection activity organized by KNI and IPIP Industrial Park. Two hundred saplings were planted, symbolizing the aspiration for harmony between humanity and nature.

This year, IPIP Industrial Park and KNI expanded their ecological efforts to Towua Village in Pomalaa, where 150 new saplings were planted under the witness of government, enterprises, and local communities, creating a "hope ark" for biodiversity. In March, Huafly hosted a tree-planting event themed "Planting Green at Huafly, Building a Low-Carbon Future," with employees gathering at the factory’s artificial lake to contribute to a greener Huafly.

At the Huafly nursery base in North Maluku—the largest local seedling cultivation site—nearly 11.5 million native plants have been nurtured. Huayou Indonesia remains committed to its mission of safeguarding a green future, deeply rooted in the fertile soil, thriving with branches and leaves, ensuring every plant becomes a testament to climate action.

Symbiotic Prosperity: Industrial Growth and Ecological Achievements

Since entering Indonesia in 2018, Huayou Indonesia has invested in and operated over 10 projects, including Huaye, Huafly, Huake, Huaxiang, and KNI, while planning the Pomalaa Industrial Park (IPIP), a project designated as a national strategic initiative. These projects and industrial parks have not only driven rapid local economic growth but also significantly contributed to local talent development and job creation. Among the 20,000 jobs generated, 80% are filled by Indonesian locals, aligning the company’s growth with community well-being.

In biodiversity conservation, Huayou Indonesia actively protects Indonesia’s rich natural ecosystems. The company has committed to avoiding construction in World Heritage Sites, protected areas, or UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. Through innovative practices such as vegetation transplantation and ecological corridor development, it bridges industrial civilization with natural heritage.

Faced with the climate crisis, Huayou employs cutting-edge technology to mitigate environmental impact. Certifications like ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and ISO 14064/14067 Carbon Footprint form a green defense line. Its self-developed low-carbon processes reduce energy consumption in the Huaye and Huafly projects to 30%-50% of industry averages. This technological breakthrough annually reduces carbon emissions equivalent to the carbon sequestration capacity of 288 million mature trees, transforming "black metals" into a "green miracle."

Indonesia’s goal of restoring 600,000 hectares of mangroves by 2024 aligns closely with Huayou’s ecological strategy. The company will continue exploring regional conservation efforts to deliver tangible value to local communities, fostering a virtuous cycle of "protection-rehabilitation-benefits-renewal."

Huayou has proven that ESG is not a cost but a new engine for value creation. As mangrove roots deepen in the mudflats, the bond between enterprises and communities grows stronger. This ESG model—anchored in ecological restoration, supported by technological innovation, and grounded in community co-governance—reflects Huayou’s global responsibility, a commitment, and a grand journey toward oceanic civilization.
